Church of San Nicola in Carchere

San Nicola in Carcere, St Nicholas in prison
Italy, Rome
The Church of San Nicola in Carcere was built in 1599 by the Italian architect Giacomo della Porta. The basilica was built on the site of the former forum of Olitorio, and the columns of three pagan temples - Juno, Sapita and Janus - were skillfully used in the architectural ensemble of the building. The relics of the holy martyrs are kept in the church. Fragments of the frescoes "Madonna and Child", "Trinity and Angels" and "Ascension" are of great value.

The church was built on the remains of three temples from the times of republican Rome - the temple of Hope (eight columns), the temple of Juno Sospita (in the middle and 2 columns on the facade) and the temple of Janus (six columns in the left wall)
