Basilica of San Paolo Fuori le Mura

Basilica of St. Paul outside the city walls, Basilica di San Paolo fuori le Mura, Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls
Italy, Rome
St. Paul's Basilica outside the city walls is one of the four great, or patriarchal, basilicas of Rome. Unlike all the others, it is located outside the Aurelian Walls, in the southern part of the Eternal City. In 1980 it was included in the World Heritage List.
Unlike other patriarchal basilicas, St. Paul's outside the wall did not undergo significant changes either during the Renaissance or during the Baroque era, but on July 15, 1823 it burned out almost to the ground. The restoration of the temple continued until 1840, and a completely new classicist facade was built.
One of the characteristic features of the basilica is a gallery of portraits of all the Popes, placed in medallions along the inner perimeter of the building.

St. Paul's Cathedral at first sight became my favorite temple in Rome. Whether it was because it was the first basilica on the list of visits, or its external and internal decoration fascinated me, it is not like any other ... Unfortunately, we were in the Basilica of San Paolo Fuori le Mura once, because it is located outside the city. But you can easily get there by metro on the blue line to the Basilica S. Paolo station. Inside and out, everything looks majestic and delightful. Huge sculptures of the apostles, tall granite columns, a ceiling decorated with gilded panels, a string of mosaic medallions depicting Popes - all this is very impressive.
