Santa Maria dello Spasimo is the now dilapidated monastery church of Palermo. It is known for the altar painting by Raphael “The Way of the Cross”, which was previously located in it.
Construction began in 1509 and was never completed. The constant threat of a Turkish invasion forced the Palermitans to rebuild and reinforce the city's fortifications. A part of the new protective structures was a moat that passed in 1537 through the territory of the monastery under construction. In 1569, the Senate of Palermo bought this land for military needs, and the monks left the unfinished monastery.
