From the cathedral begins the old street Laubengasse or Via Portici (13th century). Here the porticos form two long galleries on either side of the street, so that one can walk from one end to the other without going out into the open sky. What does the side of the street, which is closer to the mountain range, called "mountain porticos", and which is closer to the river - "water porticos". Today it is Merano's main shopping street.
