Church of Soccorso
Church of Santa Maria del Soccorso, Chiesa del Soccorso, Soccorso's church
Italy, Ischia
The church is one of the symbols of the city of Forio and one of the most original architectural structures on the island. The church of Soccorso was founded as an Augustinian monastery in 1350, but its architecture was changed by the construction of a chapel and dome over the apse in the 18th and 19th centuries. An earthquake in 1883 destroyed the building, after which the dome was rebuilt and took on the form that it now has.
This church is famous all over the world not only for its location, but also for its special facade, which is white and decorated with precious 700 majolicas that depict saints and scenes of the Passion of Christ. The style of the Soccorso church is very original, it combines several different styles - Greco-Byzantine, Moorish and Mediterranean. The church houses various Christian artifacts.
