Torrione Tower
Il Torrione, Torrione Tower
Italy, Ischia
The construction of fortifications on the coasts of Ischia in order to protect against the raids of the Saracens began in the 9th century. Subsequently, starting from the 16th century, these fortifications were equipped with cannons and firearms. Interesting evidence of protection against raids by robbers is presented in Torrion, the main fortress tower located in the port of Forio, built by 1480. This tower has two levels: the first, inaccessible from the outside, served as a warehouse where food, ammunition and a cistern with rainwater were stored. water; on the second was a garrison of 10 people with a commander who monitored the appearance of enemies. There were 4 cannons on the upper terrace.
