The square is named after the former church and Dominican monastery, which occupy the entire northern part of the square. The buildings now house a museum. In the center of the square is a monument to General Manfredo Fanti, one of the founders of the united Italian army. The monument was erected with funds raised by the military throughout Italy. The model of the monument was created in 1869 by sculptor Pio Fedi, cast in bronze in 1872 by Clemente Papi. It was inaugurated on April 1.1872. The general is depicted with his head uncovered, much of his uniform covered with a cloak.→
