Monument to the Fallen at the Battle of Mentana

Monumento ai caduti della battaglia di Mentana
Italy, Florence
The monument is located in the center of Florence, on Mentana Square (Piazza Mentana), and is dedicated to the events of 150 years ago, when in the battle of the city of Mentana, which took place on November 3, 1867, supporters of the unification of Italy, led by the outstanding commander Giuseppe Garibaldi, and papal troops came together, consisting mainly of French soldiers. The forces were equal, but Garibaldi's poorly organized army was opposed by professional military men, and besides, well-armed ones. As a result, Garibaldi had to retreat outside the so-called Papal States, and French troops entrenched themselves in Rome until 1870. The monument depicts two fighters from Garibaldi's army, one of whom is wounded, while the other continues to fight. The sculptural composition was created by Oreste Calzolari. The grand opening of the monument dedicated to the memory of 150 soldiers who died in battle against the Franco-Papal troops at Mentana took place on April 27, 1902.
