Today it is one of the best preserved towers in medieval Florence. Built in the thirteenth century, it belonged to the Compiobesi family. Since 1308 - the residence of Arte della Lana, the richest guild of wool producers in Florence. In 1569, the architect Bernardo Buontalenti built a portal and an arch that connect the tower with Orsanmichele and are now used to enter the museum.

Many 14th-century frescoes have been preserved indoors: religious and allegorical subjects, coats of arms, and guild-related activities, such as the wool and wool weaving phases. Above one of the entrances is a sculptural coat of arms of the Medici family.

Since 1905, the building belongs to Societ? Dantesca Italiana (Italian Dante Union), which has its offices and library here. This year, the palace was completely restored by architect Enrico Lucini, emphasizing elements of its medieval origins.
