Complex San Firenze

Complesso di San Firenze
Italy, Florence
The architectural complex of San Firenze is located on the square of the same name in the historic center of Florence and consists of a functioning church and an oratory, now serving as a city court. And although the appearance of the complex is not particularly distinguished by anything, its interior, on the contrary, deserves the attention of tourists, for whom, by the way, admission is free. The history of the complex begins in the middle of the 17th century, when the oratorian monks were given a plot of land on which the church of San Firenze was already located. Over time, additional premises were added to the church, including a new church consecrated in honor of St. Philip Neri, the founder of the Catholic Society of Oratorians. As a result, all worship services began to be held in it, and the old church building began to be used as an oratory. The interior decoration of the Philip Neri church was worked, in particular, by such Italian masters as Giuseppe Pinzani, Alessandro Gherardini and Matteo Bonechci. In addition, there is an impressive collection of works of art.. As for the oratory, the wonderful stucco and frescoes depicting the deeds of St. Philip Neri are of interest.

In 1640, the Order of the Filipinos received as a gift from Pope Urban VIII a plot of land with houses and the ancient church of San Fiorenzo, which is mentioned in 1174. The monks planned to build a large complex - a church, a monastery and an oratory - in honor of the canonized in 1622, the Florentine saint Philip Neri, the founder of the order. Much of the money for the construction was inherited from Giuliano Serragli, who died in 1648. The complex was built in 1667 according to the project and under the direction of architect Pierrot Francesco Silvani.
