The basilica was built during the XIV-XV centuries, becoming the first large basilica in Florence, later - the Dominican Church of the city. The building combines elements of Gothic and early Renaissance architecture, inside it is decorated with numerous frescoes.

The construction plan was drawn up by two monks, Fra Sisto Fiorentino and Fra Ristoro Campi. Construction began in the middle of the XIII century (around 1246); in 1279 the naves were completed, and around 1360 Fra Jacopo Talenti completed the construction of the bell tower in the Romanesque-Gothic style and sacristy. At that time, only the lower part of the facade was completed in the Tuscan Gothic style. In 1420 the church was consecrated.

At the request of the local merchant Giovanni di Paolo Rucellai, in 1456-1470 the architect Leon Battista Alberti rebuilt the facade of the church. A magnificent portal and the entire upper part of the church with its clear rhythm of squares inlaid with white and black marble were created.
The composition of the squares is limited on three sides by heraldic symbols of the Rucellai family, this church was built to order.
