bargello

Italy, Florence
It is considered the oldest public building in Florence - built in 1256. Initially, the building was two-story, but after a fire that occurred 70 years after construction, a third floor was added. At various times, Bargello served as the residence of a podesta (mayor in the Italian city-states), a city council, a barracks, and even a prison. The name of the building comes from the Latin bargillus and translates as "tower". Since the 19th century, the building has been a museum of sculpture, where, among others, works by Michelangelo, one of the greatest masters of the Renaissance, are exhibited.

Bargello (Italian: Bargello) is the oldest public building in Florence, which has housed a museum of sculpture since the XIX century - the National Museum of Bargello. In the Middle Ages, the building served as the residence of the Podesta and the City Council (Palazzo del Popolo), and for some time - a prison and barracks. The building was erected in 1256, first as a two-story building. The third floor was added after the fire of 1323, using smaller blocks. The open courtyard has an external staircase leading to the second floor.
