The house of the Bishop of Florence has been located in this city since at least the VIII century. The residence of the bishop (from 1419 - the archbishop) consisted of two houses, in the XV century connected by a passage. Ancient houses burned down as a result of the great fire of 1533. Construction of a new palace designed by Giovanni Antonio Dossio began in 1573. The customer was Archbishop Alessandro di Ottaviano Medici. In 1583, on the corner of the palace was installed his coat of arms by Alessandro di Giovanni - the coat of arms of the Medici family with church attributes.

The palace was repeatedly renovated by order of the Archbishops of Florence. A large amount of work was carried out in 1893-1895 by Felice Franzolini at the request of Archbishop Agostino Baus. At the end of the work, in September 1895, on the other corner of the palace was installed the coat of arms of Baus, the work of sculptor Vincenzo Rosinioli.
