The fountain was designed by the architect Tommaso Lauretti from Palermo and erected in 1565. Water was supplied to the fountain by an underground water supply from a cistern located in the courtyard of the Palazzo Comunale. Inscription on the fountain: "Pius IV the Great Pontiff, for the wider use of the townspeople, commissioned Pier Donato Cesi, Bishop of Narni, Governor of Bologna, to direct the spring water coming from the mountains to the square, and from there also to this street, and to ensure it monumental fountain.→
