The sacred building is the work of Edoardo Collamarini (1864–1928), an artist of high culture and fine sensitivity. The sanctuary has been identified as the most beautiful Sacred Heart church erected in Italy, and certainly one of the most monumental sacred buildings erected at the time.
On June 14.1901, Cardinal Domenico Swampa blessed and laid the first stone. On October 15.1912, Archbishop Giacomo della Chiesa, later Cardinal and Pope Benedict XV, consecrates and opens the majestic temple. The height of the Sanctuary from street level to the top of the cross is 67.50 meters.
On November 21.1929, at the beginning of the day, a sudden roar was heard, whitish and suffocating dust rose above the Sanctuary of the Sacred Heart and the surrounding houses. The dome of the Sanctuary collapsed, leaving the roof of the church and the upper parts of the side walls in ruins, and the floor collapsed.
On May 10.1930, the church was handed over to the Salesians. Salesian Father Antonio Gavinelli arrived in Bologna.
He came from Rimini, where he was a parish priest and renovator of the Salesian parish, called "the parish for Europe", because he built what was called "the beach for Europe", where tens of thousands of tourists gather in the summer season. Italians and foreigners, Catholics and other denominations often visit this diocese. The parish was entrusted to the Salesians and Fr. Antonio Gavinelli. He was the first parish priest. The economic conditions of that time were almost catastrophic, don Gavinelli did not have a single penny, but he was supported by a deep and hardworking faith: he was the restorer of the Sanctuary. His principle was to do good as best he could, sparing no expense.
Four years later, on January 24.1934, Collamarini's masterpiece was already restored, and Don Gavinelli was able to transfer the cross, which remained intact after the collapse of 1929, to the reconstructed dome.
On September 25.1943, the Sanctuary was heavily bombed from the air and the damage was very serious. Later, the Institute, again the Sanctuary, the laboratories, and the house of the nuns came under attack. When in mid-1945 Don Gavinelli managed to return from prison to his Bologna, he saw ruins and desolation. But Don Gavinelli was not sad. On June 22.1947, the completely restored temple was solemnly opened for the third time.
