Basilica of Saint Dominic

The Basilica of San Domenico
Italy, Bologna
Basilica of Saint Dominic is one of the main churches of Bologna, Italy. It is also the most important temple of the Dominican order, as the relics of the founder of this order are buried here. The decoration of the basilica are three small sculptures by the young Michelangelo: "Angel with a Candelabra", "Saint Proclus" and "Saint Petronius".
Dominic de Guzmán Garces, founder of the Dominican order (preachers), came to Bologna in 1218. At first, he and his followers settled in a monastery near the church of Santa Maria della Purificatione, known as Mascarella. But this monastery soon became too small for their growing numbers, and they moved in 1219 to the small church of San Nicolò delle Vigne, on the site of which a basilica was later built. Dominic settled in this church and held here the first two general chapters of the order (1220 and 1221). Dominic died in this church on 6 August 1221 and was buried behind its altar.
The Dominicans bought the territory around the church. From 1228 to 1240 a new monastery complex was built. In 1234, Pope Gregory IX canonized Dominic. The church was dedicated to Saint Dominic and was consecrated as such by Pope Innocent IV on October 17, 1251. In May 1884, Pope Leo XIII elevated it to the rank of a minor basilica, which became the prototype for many other Dominican churches.
The area in front of the basilica is still paved with cobblestones, as it was in the Middle Ages. In the center of the square rises a column with a statue of St. Dominic on top.

One of the main and most valuable temples of Bologna. The interior of the church houses numerous works of art masters, including sculptures by Michelangelo. The square in front of the temple is paved with river pebbles, just like in ancient times. The Church of San Domenico is dedicated to St. Dominic, the founder of the Order of Preachers (Dominicans or the Dominican Order). Dominic Guzmá n, who arrived in Bologna in January 1218, purchased the church of San Nicolo delle Vigne, where the basilica now stands.
