Towers of Asinelli and Garisenda

Torri degli Asinelli e Garisenda, Towers of the Asinelli and Garisenda, Leaning Towers of Asinelli and Garisenda, Torri Pendenti
Italy, Bologna
The Asinelli and Garisenda towers are the main symbols of Bologna, which are two medieval “falling” towers that tilted as a result of a violation of construction technology. They are located in the historic center of the city on a small square. Asinelli stands out for its height (97 m), and Garisenda for its slope (about 3 m). At the top of the Asinelli tower is an observation deck that offers a unique view of the entire city. Garisenda has a lower height (48 m), because it was shortened three times due to its inclination. Both towers were built in the 12th century. and performed both protective and residential functions. It is believed that they are named after the families at whose request they were built.

In my opinion, there are no protective functions here - there are no loopholes on the towers. The main reason for their construction - the usual arrogance of wealthy citizens - who has a higher tower, he is steeper. Most of the towers of Bologna were dismantled by the city authorities. Well, these have become the city's business card.

Leaning towers are not only in Pisa, there are also in Bologna: Asinelli and Garisenda. (Torre degli Asinelli, Torre Garisenda, piazza di Porta Ravegnana). The buildings date back to the 12th century, they symbolized the prestige of the customer dynasties, but Garisenda began to lean during construction, later it had to be halved, and now it is even reinforced with steel bands from destruction. Some time ago, it was still possible to climb Asinelli and view the panorama of the city, this is the tallest building in Bologna - 102 meters, but now there are security problems here, and this tower is also surrounded by steel bands.
