The building of the University Palace was built on the initiative of Pope Pius IV Medici. The project was commissioned by the architect Antonio Morandi, nicknamed Terribilia. The building was erected in 1563, absorbing the remains of buildings that once stood on this site. The purpose of the building was to gather the faculties scattered in different quarters of the city under one roof. Translated from the Greek "archigymnasium" means "high school". Until 1803, the building remained the residence of the University.

The building has two floors. The courtyard is framed by porticos. Opposite the entrance is the chapel of the Bulgarian Virgin. A wide staircase leads to the upper floor, where the auditoriums were located, including two main ones: the Hall of Artists (now the Hall of Literature) and the Hall of Lawyers. The walls of the halls, the vaults above the stairs, the vaults of the galleries are decorated with commemorative inscriptions, emblems, coats of arms of teachers and students. There are about 7.000 such memorials.
On the ground floor is the Anatomical Theater, made of carved wood (1637, Antonio Levante). The premises are decorated with anatomical statues by Ercole Lelly (18th century). Statues and busts of famous doctors are placed along the walls.

Since 1839, the building houses the Public Library, it is the largest of the public libraries in Italy. The library has 60.000 volumes, not counting manuscripts, drawings, etc . .
