The National Museum of Iceland was opened in 1863 to preserve and promote the cultural heritage of the Icelandic people. It houses an exposition of 20,000 items from the time of the settlement of Iceland to the present: drawings, watercolors, engravings, graphics, photographs. The most interesting of them are a silver sculpture of the god Thor, cast 1000 years ago, Viking weapons, a Bible from 1584, a collection of Icelandic folk clothes, a life-size copy of a fishing schooner. The museum has a scientific library where you can get acquainted with materials on archeology and history. The museum also has a café and gift shop.
