Church of Hallgrimskirkja
Hallgrimskirkja, Hallgrímur Church
Iceland, Reykjavik
Hallgrimskirkja is a Lutheran church, the fourth tallest building in Iceland, visible from anywhere in Reykjavik. The church was opened in 1986 and named after the poet and Icelandic spiritual leader Hallgrímur Pjetursson.
The church has a large mechanical organ, 15 meters high, with 5275 pipes, created by the German master Johannes Kleiss. On the cathedral square there is a monument to Leifur Erickson, the undeservedly forgotten discoverer of America, donated by the US government.
The tower of the cathedral, 73 meters high, in which the entrance to the church is located, is used as an observation tower, which offers a magnificent view of the capital and the mountains around.
