shantadurga temple
Shanta Durga Temple, Shanta Durga Temple
India, North Goa
The temple is one of the most famous in Goa. It was built in 1738 during the reign of Saza Raja of Satara. The creamy-brown temple with an unusual pagoda-shaped roof was built by Shahu, the grandson of the Maratha leader Shivaji. The temple is distinguished by a rare octagonal and five-tier tower-lamp. Huge chandeliers hang on the gilded roof of the large main hall, and the main sanctuary is decorated with silver bars, where the silver deity Shantadurga (the hypostasis of Parvati) from the Marmagao region stands. Curious are the huge chariots (rathas) used at the January festival of Jatra.
