Mangesh temple
Mangesh Temple, Shri Mangesh Maharudra Saunsthan
India, North Goa
Shri Mangesh Temple, built in 1565 and dedicated to Lord Shiva, is one of the most significant Hindu shrines in Goa. It is located near the village of Priol, 7.5 kilometers north of Ponda and 22 kilometers from Panaji. The main deity of the temple is God Mangesh, a manifestation of God Shiva.
The magnificent temple, perched on a hill, was built in typical Goan style with Christian and Muslim overtones. In the inner courtyard of the temple is a “deepdaan” (lamp tower), as high as a seven-story building. The building is the most impressive in size in Goa. The majestic white tower at the entrance is a prominent feature of the Hindu temples in the state. From the inside, the temple is lit with elegant chandeliers, which makes it different from simple Hindu temples. Approaching the right side of the building, one can see the giant ceremonial chariots used during the annual Jatra festival, which falls on the last week of January or the first of February.
