Mahalasa temple
Shri Mahalasa Devasthan, Mahalasa Temple, Mahalsa Temple
India, North Goa
Mahalsa is one of the avatars (incarnations) of the Indian god Vishnu, and this is a female incarnation, highly revered in Hinduism, which is also called Mohini. Shri Mahalsa (or Shri Mahalasa) temple was built in honor of this incarnation. Legend has it that its first location was in Nepal, then it was moved several times until it remained near the village of Mardol in the state of Goa.
The Mahalsa temple houses an image of the deity, as well as several shrines to other goddesses. The temple is famous for its bell, which, according to legend, rings only when a lie is heard in its presence. In normal times, the bell does not have a tongue; it was installed only during interrogations, including judicial ones. Also, the temple is known for the fact that it houses a huge multi-tiered oil lamp.
