Fort Chapora

Chapora Fort
India, North Goa
The fort is located 10 km from the city of Mapusa, on a hill overlooking the Big Vagator and the green-blue waters of the Indian Ocean. It was built over 500 years ago by Adil Shah Bijapur on the southern cape of the Chapora River. The fort, dating back to 1617, is one of the best examples of Portuguese architecture and is described in all Goa guidebooks as a recommended place to visit. It is also known as Shahpur.
The fort occupied a defensive position and played a significant role. Towering over a wide river, built long before the Portuguese resettlement in Goa, it was an important strategic object. Twice Chapora Fort was captured by the Marathas and rebuilt by the Portuguese in 1741 when they brought it back under their rule again. The fort was abandoned in 1890 and has been in ruins ever since.

Swimming daily in the ocean on Chapora beach, we watched the fort standing on the mountain. And then one day, waking up at 6 in the morning, having a quick sip of tea and coffee, packing a backpack, we decided to take this fort by storm. My wife previously read on the Internet that at the very end of Chapora beach there is an uphill path along which you can easily climb uphill to the fort. We went in search of this path. In the morning, before the heat sets in, walking along the beach is a pleasure.
