Palace of the Winds

Hawa Mahal, Hawa Mahal, Palace of Winds, Palace of the Breeze
India, Jaipur
The Hawa Mahal, or Palace of the Winds, is one of the most recognizable buildings in Jaipur. This original pyramidal building made of pink stone was built at the very end of the 18th century. as the harem wing at the palace of Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh. The palace got its name thanks to 953 windows covered with figured lattices, through which air is constantly circulated and a cool temperature is maintained. Hawa Mahal is a very beautiful building and should be seen by every traveler who comes to Jaipur.

This building cannot be confused with anything - it immediately catches the eye with the unusualness of its architecture. Hawa Mahal or the Palace of the Winds got its name because of the special ventilation system created by many windows. This system is recognized as unique - in the palace, even in the heat, it is much cooler than in the whole city. And these windows also served as viewing windows - the wives of the maharaja did not have the right to show themselves to people, but they could freely observe through the windows everything that was happening outside the walls of the palace.

The Palace of the Winds - Hawa Mahal has become a brand of Jaipur and one of the most remarkable buildings in the country. This unique creation of Indian architects and builders with a height of 15 m (5 floors) with a red sandstone facade was completed in 1799 and is part of a complex of palace buildings in the center of the city - the capital of Rajasthan. The order for construction came from Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh, but the completion of the construction took place under another ruler. Each of the many rooms has a carved balcony with a dome, which invariably creates coolness for the inhabitants, so the Palace was a favorite place for the large Raja family, especially in the summer.
