Jal Mahal Palace

Palace on the water Jal Mahal, Jal Mahal
India, Jaipur
The Jal Mahal Palace is a unique building located in the middle of Mansagar Lake near Jaipur. The palace was built during a drought in the middle of the 18th century and was the summer residence of King Edward VII. Currently, four floors of the building are under water, and only the upper part of the palace is visible from the outside. For a long time, Lake Mansagar was abandoned and covered with mud, but in the 2000s the reservoir was cleared. Currently, you can admire the palace only from the shore or during boat tours, but the entrance to the building itself is prohibited.

Once this palace was built by Maharaja Madho Singh in the 18th century. Then the palace ceased to be used and it was abandoned. The palace actually has five high floors, but only the top floor is above the water level. The first four levels are flooded with water. It is now privately owned and may one day become an open tourist attraction. In the meantime, you can admire the palace from afar.

The palace on the lake was built for summer holidays in a picturesque valley between low mountains. In a dry year, a dam had to be built to conserve water, the drought ended, and the enclosed valley filled with water, a lake was formed, in the middle of which the Jal Mahal flaunted, its lower floors were below the water level, although this was not originally planned. The palace has acquired a unique fairy-tale look, but the palace is closed to tourists, and you can admire it and the surrounding beauties from the shore, where Jaipur's lively park area is located with playgrounds for children and, of course, rows of merchants - how could India be without it! At the sight of the Palace, one involuntarily recalls the famous character of one of the films of the adventure comedy-romantic series about James Bond - the mysterious Octopussy, when this series had not yet turned into a cool action movie, as it is now.
