Kapaliswarar Temple - the sanctuary of the Hindu god Shiva in the 7th century - the main architectural landmark of Chennai, one of the best examples of Dravidian religious creativity. The main, eastern, entrance to the temple passes under a 37-meter gate, on which there are many colored sculptures of Hindu gods. Kapaliswarar Temple is the center of religious festivals, six temple rituals are held here daily.
The temple also worships the wife of Shiva - Goddess Parvati - one of her many incarnations in the form of a peacock.
