Gateway to India
Gateway of India
India, Bombay-Mumbai
The Gateway to India is a triumphal arch at the water's edge to commemorate the coronation visit of King George V to Bombay in December 1911. The arch, 26 meters high in the Indo-Saracenic style - a unique mixture of Muslim, European and Hindu styles, was built, in connection with the First World War, for 13 years. In order to fit the massive arch into the architectural complex of the harbor, all the facades of the surrounding buildings had to be shifted one by one. After India gained independence, the last British soldiers sailed through this gate to their homeland in 1948.
