Elephanta caves
Elephanta Caves, City of Caves
India, Bombay-Mumbai
The Elephanta Caves or "City of Caves" are located on the island of Gharapuri in the Arabian Sea near the city of Mumbai. In the 7 caves of the temple complex, created in the 5th-8th centuries, there are many stone sculptures carved by hand by monks and murals dedicated to the god Shiva. The name "Elephant" was given to the caves because of the basalt statue of an elephant in front of the entrance to the main cave. Now the statue is on display at the Mumbai Museum of History. In 1987, the cave temples were included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. You can get to the island by ferry in 40 minutes.
