Dome of the Rock
Dome of the Rock, Masjid Qubbat as-Sahra, Dome of the Rock, Kipat Hasela
Israel, Jerusalem
The Qubbat as-Sakhra Mosque was built in 687-691; inside the dome there is a ledge of the rock, from which, according to legend, the Prophet Muhammad made a miraj. It is thanks to this ledge that Kubbat as-Sahra got its name. Now this building is used as a "women's" mosque.
Kubbat as-Sakhra, in addition to its religious significance, is one of the oldest and most beautiful monuments of early Islamic architecture, having the correct proportional outlines and richly decorated internal mosaic ornament.
