Besakih Temple

Besakih is the main temple complex in Bali. It consists of 22 temples and is located in terraces at the foot of the sacred volcano Gunung Agung. A real city has been built here for monks - in addition to temples, there are outbuildings, barns for storing grain and even sites for cockfights. Many buildings are so overgrown with greenery that it seems that you are in an abandoned city. Especially if at this time Besakih is covered with a cap of clouds that have descended from the top of the volcano. Foreigners are allowed to enter the territory of the temple, but only to the top of the main staircase - to the first courtyard. You can’t get inside the temples themselves, but even outwardly Besakih is very beautiful, not to mention the bright religious holidays and processions of pilgrims. In particular, Piodalalan is celebrated annually on the full moon in October.
The three largest temples of the complex are Penataran Agung (Shiva temple), Batu Madeg (Vishnu temple) and Kiduling Kreteg (Brahma temple), the rest are somewhat smaller. You can get to Besakih through the Klun-gkung area with its Bukit Jambul rice plantations.
