Founded in 1974, the Jakarta History Museum is housed in the former city hall. At one time, the basement of the building was occupied by prison barracks, which are now part of the museum's exposition. The extensive collection of the museum presents historical artifacts, works of art, handicrafts and household items from ancient times to the present. A separate part of the exposition is devoted to the period of the Dutch East India Company.
