Puputan Square
Puputan Badung Square, Lapangan Puputan Badung
Indonesia, Denpasar
The geographical and historical center of the city of Denpasar. The monument on the square commemorates the events of 1906, the so-called puputan in Badung, when, before the battle with the colonial troops, the Raja of Badung, his family and household, women and children, the Badung nobility and servants of the palace committed a cult rite of suicide. In front of the eyes of the Dutch troops, armed with guns and cannons, the Balinese in white robes and expensive gold jewelry stabbed themselves with daggers. The Dutch were shocked by what they saw, and the soldiers rushed to the dead and agonizing bodies to remove the golden things. The monument is a group: a man, a woman and two children with Malay daggers in their hands.
