The building of the largest Protestant church in Europe rises on the central square of the city. It proclaimed the independence of Hungary in 1849. On the site of today's building stood a rather large Gothic church of St. Andrew (built in 1297-1311), which burned down in 1564. For a long time it was not restored. Only by 1628, the Protestants of Debrecen, with the support of Duke Rakoczi I, restored it again, but in a different architectural design. In 1640-1642, a tower with a bell weighing about 300 kg was completed.→
