Ethnographic Museum of Budapest, Néprajzi Múzeum, Ethnographic Museum
Hungary, Budapest
The Ethnographic Museum in Budapest is considered one of the largest museums of ethnography in Europe. The museum collection includes almost 200 thousand exhibits, including artworks, photographs, clothes, accessories, jewelry from different eras. The museum is dedicated to the culture of not only the Hungarian people, but also other European and non-European peoples from primitive to civilized society.

Since 1973, the museum has been housed in the building of the former Palace of Justice on Lajos Kossuth Square opposite the building of the Hungarian Parliament.

The design of this building was prepared by the architect for the design competition for the building of the Hungarian Parliament, but lost the competition and was eventually brought to life as the Palace of Justice, which later housed the ethnographic museum. Now the museum is closed to visitors in connection with the planned move to a new building. The Palace of Justice itself, of course, pales next to the modern Hungarian Parliament, but still deserves attention as an interesting example of architecture in the style of the Grunderstvo era.

The Ethnographic Museum in Budapest is one of the largest, most important museums in Europe, with a diverse collection of more than 200.000 ethnographic artifacts, as well as historical photographs, manuscripts, folk music, films and videos of both Hungarian and international cultural significance. It is noteworthy that the Hungarian collection of the museum contains the largest material on traditional Hungarian folk culture not only in Hungary but throughout Europe. More than half of the collection was collected between 1874 and the end of the First World War.
