House of Terror

Terror Museum, House of terror
Hungary, Budapest
The House Museum of Terror in Budapest is located on the corner of Andrássy Avenue and Csengeri Street, in the building that once housed the Hungarian State Security Office. The museum is dedicated to the tragic periods of the totalitarian history of the country. The House of Terror, after a year of reconstruction, was inaugurated on February 24, 2002, on the eve of the Day of Victims of the Communist Regime. The architect Attila Kovacs worked on the facade of the building and the interior of the exhibition halls of the museum, who gave the building a strict, almost mournful look. Both façade sides of the building are framed by a wide canopy with two large Terror inscriptions cut out like on a stencil, the shadow of which is clearly visible on the upper part of the façade in sunny weather.
At the entrance there is a high solid curtain wall made of thick chains, as a symbol of the iron curtain between the socialist camp and the rest of Europe, and a concrete block, as a symbol of the Berlin Wall. The halls of the museum are equipped with large plasma screens for archival newsreels, each thematic section is complemented by old photographs and documents. There are halls that tell about the activities of the Hungarian political police, about terror against the priests of the Catholic Church, a detention cell, a punishment cell, a torture chamber, an interrogation room, a hall of the 1956 uprising, and other interesting expositions.

The museum is located near the Heroes' Square. The visor of the building casts an ominous shadow of terror with a Soviet star on the asphalt, which makes you feel uneasy. However, you will not find anything new and shocking for people from the post-Soviet space there. The expositions are quite poor, much is not clear without an audio guide, and the entrance is also not cheap. Not a must visit place.
