The bridge received its current name in 1898 after the Hungarian politician Count Istvan Szechenyi, who put a lot of effort and money into its construction. In addition to Szechenyi, much of the funding was provided by the Greek industrialist Georgios Sinas, who had significant financial and land interests in the city and whose name is inscribed in the foundation of the southwestern part of the bridge on the Buda side. The decorations of the bridge are made by cast iron. Lions on each of the pillars were carved out of stone by sculptor Janos Marshall. They resemble the famous bronze lions in Trafalgar Square. However, the Budapest lions are older, although smaller in size.
A memorial plaque to its builder, William Clark, has been erected on the waterfront near the bridge.
