Arboretum Trsteno
Trsteno Arboretum, Trsteno Arboretum, Trsteno Botanical Garden
Croatia, Dubrovnik
Arboretum Trsteno, located in the village of the same name near Dubrovnik, is the only arboretum on the Croatian coast that combines culture and natural heritage.
The Arboretum is famous for the fact that it was founded in the 15th century, during the Renaissance, and is not only a unique Renaissance garden, but also older than the numerous and more famous Italian and French gardens. It is an example of a well-preserved aristocratic agricultural estate, with characteristic architectural features typical of the surroundings of Dubrovnik, taking into account the climatic and natural conditions, as well as the inclinations of the owners, the famous Dubrovnik aristocratic Gucetics-Gozze family.
Spread over an area of 25 hectares, the arboretum combines several parts with different purposes: a historic Renaissance garden with a summer residence, a neo-romantic historic garden, a historic olive grove and natural vegetation of oak, coniferous trees, shrubs and coastal sea walls.
Along with the vegetation, which creates a picture of a beautiful oasis among the harsh stone surroundings, the estate is decorated with an aqueduct, a baroque fountain, decorated with a sculpture of the god of the sea Neptune surrounded by nymphs, the chapel of St. Jerome. Between the outbuildings located nearby, an old mill stands out, with a press for the production of olive oil preserved in it.
