Excavations of Akrotiri
Akrotiri
Greece, Santorini
Akrotiri is the name of the excavations at the site of a Bronze Age settlement on the Greek island of Santorini, attributed to the Minoan civilization. The name of the excavations is given by the name of a modern village located on a nearby hill. The original name of the ancient settlement is unknown. It was buried under a layer of ash from a volcanic eruption around 1500 BC, and as a result, it is surprisingly well preserved. At the site of excavations, begun in 1967 by the famous Greek archaeologist Spyridon Marinatos, frescoes, pottery, furniture, complex drainage and sewer systems, and three-story buildings were found.
