Ancient Fira was founded on Mesa Vouno, 15 km southeast of the modern capital. Its settlement began in the 9th century BC, and among the structures discovered during excavations, an Agora (market), several temples of Dionysius and Apollo, a theater, a cave in which rituals were performed in honor of Hermes and Hercules, a garrison, a training ground were found , gymnasium and Roman baths. The Archaeological Museum of Fira exhibits dishes found during excavations, as well as coins and ceramics.
