The Cathedral of Panagia Tu Castru was erected at the end of the 11th century and belonged to the cross-domed architectural type. In 1309 the church was turned into a Gothic three-nave basilica, the Byzantine dome was replaced with ribbed-cross vaults. The interior of the temple has practically not been preserved, with the exception of some fragments of murals depicting the Most Holy Theotokos and four other saints. At the beginning of the 16th century, Rhodes was captured by the Turks, the basilica was turned into a mosque and the minaret was completed. Later, the Ottoman superstructures were removed, and since 1988, the church of Panagia Tou Kastru has housed an exhibition of Byzantine and post-Byzantine painting.
