Archaeological Museum of Rhodes

Archaeological Museum of Rhodes
Greece, Rhodes
The Archaeological Museum is housed within the walls of the restored Hospital of the Knights (15th century).

From the courtyard, a staircase leads to the Infirmary on the upper floor (a small chapel in a recess opposite the entrance; gravestones of the knights). The passage on the right leads to the halls where the exhibits found in Ialyssos, Kamiros and other places are exhibited. Among them are two archaic kouros (6th century BC) and in the same room a funerary stele (late 5th century BC). In other rooms you can see a life-size statue of Aphrodite, the expressive head of Helios of the Hellenistic era and a small statue of Aphrodite bowing, the so-called Venus of Rhodes (1st century BC). Also of interest is the rich collection of vases, spanning all periods from the Mycenaean era, and including some particularly fine examples of Rhodian wares.

There are many exhibits, but they are all similar, for a person who is not versed in history and archeology, it will soon become boring here. At least that was the case with us and a few other couples who were there with us. The kids are bored. The place itself is beautiful and majestic, but walking there for a long time is not interesting.

There is this museum in the center of the old city. The city itself impressed, but not this part of it. To be honest, it was frankly boring. We made the mistake of not reading anything about this place in advance, which is probably why it happened. Everything is beautiful, unusual, but just look and leave. Rarely in what museums is it different, and this one is no exception.

Those who love museums and those who have not yet met a good museum will like it here. The building itself, its unusual "layout", an abundance of interesting exhibits, atmosphere, impressions. Recomend for everybody.

The exhibits are either boring for my picky taste, or not very good in and of themselves. Mosaics, ceramics, statues . . not very interested. But I really liked the castle. It was the hospital of the knights of the Ionites, in the Middle Ages. The huge hall on the second floor also impressed the patio. Everything breathes antiquity and chivalry)) Be sure to visit, especially if you like the museum
