Monastery of Arkadi
Arkadi Monastery, Moni Arkadiou

A monastery on the island of Crete, located 25 km southeast of Rethymno on the northwestern slope of Mount Ida at an altitude of 500 m. The walls of the monastery form a shape close to a rectangle and cover an area of 5200 sq.m.
The exact date of foundation of the monastery is unknown. According to one version, its history begins with the time of Flavius Arcadius (beginning of the 5th century). Other sources claim that Arcadi was founded by the Byzantine emperor Heraclius I. Pitton de Tournefort claimed that the monastery was located on the site of the ancient city of Arcadia. The monastery church dates back to the 16th century.
Today, the monastery has a museum with unique relics.
