Fortress of Palamidi
Palamidi
Greece, Peloponnese
Palamidi is a fortress in Nafplion built by the Venetians in 1687. The construction of the fortress began after the Venetians recaptured the hill (height 216 m) from the Turks during the Venetian-Turkish war. 999 steps lead to the fortress.
During the Greek Revolution of 1821, the Turks occupied the fortress, but on November 30, 1822, the Greeks drove the aggressors out of Palamidi. After the revolution, Palamidi served as a prison.
