Corinth Canal

Corinth Canal
Greece, Peloponnese
The Corinth Canal is a canal in Greece connecting the Saronic Gulf of the Aegean and the Gulf of Corinth of the Ionian Sea. It is dug through the Isthmus of Corinth, which separates the Peloponnese peninsula from the mainland. The name was given in honor of the city of Corinth, located at the western end of the canal. The canal is 6 kilometers long and 8 meters deep. The walls of the canal are of natural origin, mainly limestone, the height of the walls reaches 76 meters. The construction of the Corinth Canal was carried out for more than ten years (1881-1893) by two and a half thousand workers who used the best machines at that time.

One railway and three automobile bridges are thrown across the canal. Bungee jumping is practiced on the bridges of the canal.

We lived in Loutraki, not far from the canal, we passed it several times, as the highway passes through the canal. In the evening, we decided to take a closer look. We parked and walked to have a look. Evening, and crowds of tourists. Buses stop constantly, people get off, take a couple of shots and back. Here we met the sunset, wanting to wait for the time when some more or less large ship would sail along the canal. We waited. The place is beautiful, but you should not specifically rush here, only if you are on the way.

And here is the Corinth Canal in front of you, 79 meters down to the water, 24 meters wide, ships no more than 5 tons, since the depth is only 8 meters. On the left is the Aegean Sea, on the right is the Ionian, or vice versa: ) The channel connects the Corinthian Gulf of the Ionian Sea with the Saronic Gulf of the Aegean Sea. However, this channel is used not only as a great place for a photo session, as a navigable channel, but also for extreme sports lovers. Extreme people are drawn here. Australian stuntman Robbie Maddisson managed to jump over this channel in 2010 in a particularly impressive way, speeding up on a motorcycle.
