Temple of Epicurean Apollo at Bassae
Temple of Apollo Epicurius in Bassae
Greece, Peloponnese
Bass is the territory between the ancient Greek regions of Arcadia, Triphylia and Messenia. In this mountainous area, on the western slope of Mount Cotilion, at an altitude of 1130 meters above sea level, the inhabitants of the city of Figalia founded a sanctuary dedicated to Epicurean Apollo.
Due to the remoteness from the main Greek centers, the temple was forgotten for a long time, but it is precisely because of this that it has been so well preserved to this day. It was accidentally discovered by a French architect in 1765. The first serious excavations were carried out here in 1836.
