The Archaeological Museum of Olympia is one of the largest museums in Greece, displaying antiquities from the ancient city of Olympia.
The museum was founded in the 19th century. The so-called Old Museum of Olympia was a neoclassical building erected on a hill west of Altis, but in 1885 the museum was badly damaged by earthquakes. The modern building was built in a valley southwest of Kronion Hill between 1966 and 1975. The official grand opening of the new museum took place in 1982.
The main sections: the collection of terracotta (prehistoric, archaic and classical periods), the collection of bronze, the collection of sculptures (from archaic to the period of Roman rule), the collection dedicated to the Olympic competitions.
The most famous exhibits: Hermes with the baby Dionysus, Praxiteles, Nike, Paeonius, Zeus carries Ganymede, the helmet of Miltiades.
