Hippocratic plane tree
Tree of Hippocrates, Tree of Hippocrates
Greece, Kos
The plane tree is located near the entrance to the Fortress of St. John. According to legend, Hippocrates himself planted it in order to study with his students in the shade of his crown. According to legend, under this huge plane tree with a trunk circumference of 12 meters, a healer, born in the 460th century BC, taught medicine to his students. In reality, the tree is much younger.
The branches of the tree, leaning to the very ground, are carefully supported by iron supports, and the plane tree itself rises on a stone pedestal, which serves as something like a huge flower bed for it.
