Ioannite Fort, Kos Castle, Kos Castle

Fort of the Knights of the Order of St. John is located near the port. The fort was built in the 15th century and fortified with a double wall in the 16th century to withstand the attacks of the Turkish army.
It is located in the center of the island, about 25 km from the capital. On its inner gate there is a well-preserved coat of arms of the Grand Master of the Order of the Knights of St. John Pierre de Aubusson.
There are two chapels on the territory of the fortress. One of them was once the local church of the Knights of the Order. From the walls of the fortress offers a panoramic view of the entire southern coast of the island. Previously, ancient buildings were located here, but they were destroyed as a result of a strong earthquake. The stones and marble of ancient buildings were used by the Ioannites in the process of building their fortress.
