Near the old Venetian fortress there is a large square called Spinada, divided by a street into two parts: Ano Platea (Upper Square) and Kato Platea (Lower Square). It is the largest square in South Eastern Europe and one of the largest in all of Europe, filled with green spaces and interesting buildings, such as the Romanesque rotunda from the British administration, known as the Maitland Monument, built in memory of British officer Sir Thomas Maitland. A richly decorated music pavilion is also located in the square. In it, the local Philharmoniques (Philharmonic Orchestra) gives classical performances in artistic and musical traditions. Kato Platea also occasionally hosts cricket matches. In Greece, cricket is played only in Corfu, where it appeared thanks to the times of the protectorate of Britain.
